Senior Caseworker

An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Caseworker based in Abena's busy constituency office to work alongside her established Senior Caseworker.

We're looking for an individual experienced in problem-solving to provide advice and support to constituents on a variety of issues and assist with constituency engagement. This role is constituent facing and requires excellent people skills and strong administrative skills, with experience of using Microsoft Office. No political experience is needed but lived experience of using services in Abena’s constituency is desirable. This role requires skills and experience in handling people in need with compassion and professionalism.

This is a permanent role (with a 6 month probationary period) and full-time, part-time and flexible working options may be considered.

Key responsibilities
• Providing advice and support to constituents through liaison with Government agencies, local authorities, the voluntary sector and others
• Managing and progressing the office casework load
• Managing the constituency diary ensuring that the MP is briefed appropriately; preparing for and attending surgery appointments and constituency visits with the MP
• Dealing with enquiries from members of the public and other organisations and taking the appropriate initial action to resolve, delegate or escalate
• Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of relevant guidelines/legislation
• Analysing patterns of cases and reporting to Office Manager and MP
• Ensuring cases are dealt with in a sensitive and confidential manner
• Supervising other members of staff

Person specification

• Previous experience of managing casework (or equivalent), either in an MP’s Office, the Civil Service, local authority, solicitor’s firm or a third sector organisation is essential.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Pays attention to detail and ensures team's work is of a high standard
• A high standard of written English
• Prioritises work effectively and with minimal direction
• Excellent administrative and organisational skills with an ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multi task
• Experience of dealing with sensitive and confidential information
• Competent use of standard office IT packages. Experience of using Caseworker.mp is desirable but not essential.
• Understanding and sympathy with the aims and goals of the Labour Party
• A commitment to helping people and getting the best result possible for residents

This position is one of the most important roles in Abena’s office as it involves managing day-to-day contact with Abena’s constituents. The post is based in her constituency office, with most of Abena’s team. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
