Insurance Claims Officer

We are seeking an Insurance Claims Officer to oversee and manage all aspects of insurance and claims within our organisation. This role is crucial in ensuring we have an appropriate insurance and claims handling strategy that balances costs against potential liabilities and associated reputational risks. The successful candidate will manage external relationships with outsourced handling providers, insurers, brokers, and lawyers, and provide feedback and liaise with Operational Management on emerging trends to influence the development of risk management techniques.

Day to Day of the Role:
  • Maintain knowledge of the insurance market and build relationships to protect the group’s long-term interests.
  • Work with insurance companies and brokers for insurance tender processes.
  • Present changes to the group’s risk profile to the market to ensure coverage.
  • Identify new risks and ensure appropriate cover is in place.
  • Conduct policy reviews, compile loss trends, and review actuarial assessments.
  • Prepare reports for the Finance/Leadership Team, the Board, and Committees.
  • Analyse claims and incidents data to inform colleagues about risk factors.
  • Recommend and monitor risk control measures.
  • Manage the reserves of liability claims within an effective governance framework.
  • Direct the defence of litigated claims, attending court hearings and settlement meetings as necessary.
  • Ensure proactive claims handling and review reserves for realistic outcomes.
  • Assist in maximising third-party recovery claims.
  • Maintain claims handling protocols consistent with industry best practice.
  • Inform management of the cost of accidents and implications on self-insured risks.
  • Conduct internal reviews and audits of claims files to prevent cost leakage.
  • Act as a technical referral point and provide input on liability and tactical decision making.
  • Advise on the placement of the insurance portfolio to manage and transfer risk cost-effectively.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Experience in decision-making within a financial framework.
  • Proficiency in using a risk management framework.
  • Understanding of insurance policy documentation and levels of cover.
  • At least 3 years of supervisory/management experience in the insurance/motor claims sector.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong IT skills, particularly in MS Excel and Word.
  • Experience in the transport industry is advantageous.
  • Ability to analyse data and prepare reports for directors.
  • Self-motivated with the drive to influence change.
  • Knowledge of market submission and advising on insurance-related matters.
