We are currently working in partnership with a National Federated charity, renowned for their youth work across the UK. They are looking to appoint a Commercial Lawyer on a permanent basis.

This will be a full-time position based in London, with a salary of £48,235 per annum.

The ideal candidate will be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister with strong PQE (two years at least) in general property law, with good experience in either commercial or contract law, preferably gained by working with charities.

The main focus of this position is on the delivery of legal advice to the organisation and its subsidiary companies. This is mainly on property and commercial matters, but also support on general advice to staff and volunteers.

Duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • Reporting directly into the Deputy Head of Legal, as well as, line managing a Legal Officer in the team
  • Supporting the organisation with managing its property portfolio. This includes preparing, negotiating, drafting and advising on a range of commercial property matters including the grant, renewal and surrender of leases, commercial sales and purchases, within a charitable context
  • Providing advice to the charity and the Trust Corporation, which acts as Custodian Trustee for the organisation and its members in relation to property matters and overseeing its appointment processes
  • Leading on the relationship with the Trust Corporation and assisting the Head of Legal Services in her capacity as its Company Secretary
  • Advising the team and its subsidiaries in relation to general commercial and compliance matters. This includes advising on some contracting and fundraising arrangements
  • Supporting staff and HQ volunteers with ad-hoc legal queries relating to safe, legal and compliant activities
  • Supporting the legal team with general advice and signposting and overseeing legal claims and disputes
  • Proactively developing policies, guidance, resources and processes for the legal team and improving the custodian service provided by the Trust Corporation
  • Carrying out any other legal work and tasks as required by the Head of Legal Services

Experience required:

  • Qualified Solicitor or Barrister with at least two years Post Qualification Experience
  • Demonstrable experience of commercial property legal work
  • Knowledge of general commercial law and regulatory matters affecting the charity sector
  • Good experience of negotiating and drafting complex contracts

Skills, knowledge and expertise required:

  • Ability to take a pro-active approach to and responsibility for developing and maintaining senior stakeholder relationships
  • Demonstrable excellent client care skills and ability to build relationships
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Accurately record instructions and provide clear advice both orally and in writing
  • Proactively manage, organise and prioritise own workload with minimum supervision
  • Meet targets and comply with case management procedures

Working hours:

  • Full time (35 hours a week)
  • Monday to Friday
  • Working from home three days a week (some scope for flexibility)
