Sellick Partnership are pleased to be working with a reputable London based Local Authority to recruit an experience Senior Planning Lawyer to join their legal team. This position is available on an initial 3 month locum contract, but is likely to be extended on a rolling basis.

This role would be ideally suited to an experienced Senior Planning Lawyer who is confident acting with minimal supervision, but you will still be well supported in your role. The client is ideally looking for someone who can attend planning committees once per month however this is negotiable, and there can be more flexibility for the right candidate.

The Senior Planning Lawyer role is highly rewarding and will entail challenge, autonomy, and opportunity, and the successful candidate will have the chance to be involved in interesting projects. This role could also provide long-term prospects for those who are open to considering permanent opportunities down the line.

Job Purpose:

  • To support the Principal Lawyer and Legal Services management team in the provision of strategic, high-level legal advice to the Councils, Members, and Officers, and support the provision of legal solutions in planning and related areas to enable the Councils to progress with corporate goals.
  • To lead and manage a team in a shared back-office support service. The team will include lawyers, legal officers, and support staff. The Senior Lawyer will support the Team Leader in the delivery of a portfolio of high-quality, and solution focused legal work in more than one discipline and across multiple sites, to customers in different organisations.
  • To have personal responsibility for a caseload of complex matters including, complex s106, planning, and highways advice, policy work, committees, inquiries, appeals, judicial review, and act as subject expert, with minimal need for supervision or external assistance.
  • To support the Principal Lawyer in meeting the strategic aims of the Legal Services department.
  • To build positive relationships with customers, assisting the Principal Lawyer in the role as relationship manager, and developing and marketing new and innovative solutions.
  • To support the Principal Lawyer in developing ways of maximising and improving income generation, and identifying savings.
