Job Summary:

Role Title: Principal Lawyer (Property, Planning and Regeneration)Service Area: Legal Services / Property & PlanningDirectorate: Culture, Strategy, and EngagementPay: £38.00 per hour

Role Purpose:The Principal Lawyer provides expert legal advice on complex issues and leads a legal team to ensure compliance with the Council's statutory and contractual obligations. The role involves supporting the Monitoring Officer and contributing to the Council's corporate objectives and business planning. The individual will also foster innovation within the Legal Service and manage strategic support for local and Council-wide projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead and manage a legal team, ensuring they deliver high-quality, cost-effective services.
  2. Provide legal advice to Council Members and officers and support in strategic business planning.
  3. Drive innovation in the Legal Service, balancing risk management and political sensitivity.
  4. Work collaboratively across teams and divisions to deliver Council services.
  5. Act as a deputy for the Head of Legal Services and support the Monitoring Officer.
  6. Advocate for the Council on complex legal matters and ensure timely, strategic legal support for projects.
  7. Promote partnership working and contribute to corporate strategies and business planning.
  8. Manage workforce planning, recruitment, and staff development.
  9. Attend Committees and provide legal advice on complex issues.
  10. Ensure continuous improvement in the delivery of legal services through performance management and innovation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Institute of Legal Executives Fellow.
  • At least 5 years' experience managing complex legal cases and providing senior-level legal advice.
  • Proven experience in managing a legal team, driving change, and improving service delivery.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to make decisions and provide clear direction in a political environment.
  • Knowledge of performance measures and continuous improvement in legal services.

Dimensions:

  • Reports to the Head of Legal Services (Litigation, Property, and Planning).
  • Manages a team of 6-10 staff members.
  • No budget responsibility but responsible for staff management and service delivery.
