Senior Planning Lawyer - London Borough Local Authority


Rate: 50-60 per hour DOE
Contract: 3 months with the view to extend.



About the Role

A London based council is seeking an experienced Senior Planning Lawyer to provide high-quality legal services to support the Planning, Highways, and Specialist Planning teams. This role offers an excellent opportunity to work on complex and high-profile legal matters within a dynamic local government environment.



Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload involving planning, highways, and environmental law.
  • Represent the Council in Civil and Criminal Courts, Tribunals, and Planning Inquiries.
  • Draft legal agreements, including section 106 agreements.
  • Provide legal advice and guidance to Planning and Corporate teams.
  • Prepare legal comments for reports and advise on legislative changes.
  • Deliver training and briefings to council members and client departments.
  • Attend and advise at committees, working parties, and officer group meetings.


Candidate Requirements

  • Qualified as a Solicitor, Barrister, or Legal Executive in England and Wales.
  • Experience in planning, highways, and/or environmental law.
  • Strong advocacy, negotiation, and legal drafting skills.
  • Ability to manage a complex and varied caseload.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Knowledge of Local Government law and Civil & Criminal Court procedures.
