Summary:

Are you passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of young people in care? Our client, a London Borough Council, is seeking a Leaving Care Personal Advisor to join their dynamic team. As a Personal Advisor, you will provide support, guidance, and practical assistance to young people transitioning from care to independent living. This is a temporary position offering an excellent hourly rate of £19 to £24.64.

Skills: Children Act 1989, looked-after and young people leaving care, education provisions, benefits and grants for care leavers, Asylum Seeking and Unaccompanied children, accommodation issues faced by care leavers, welfare housing benefits, supported housing and permanent accommodation

Contract Type: Temporary, Full-time, 35 hours per week

Hourly Rate From: £19 p/h PAYE - £24.64 p/h Umbrella

Based near Canary Wharf, conveniently located just 6 minutes walk from a station. Visitor parking is available nearby with a walking distance of only 2 minutes.

Enhanced DBS will need to be processed or valid on the update service.

As a Leaving Care Personal Advisor, your main purpose will be to provide support services to young people transitioning from care via the Pathway Assessment and Planning Process. This will include addressing areas such as education, training, employment, accommodation, health, personal support, family and social relationships, practical skills, and financial assistance.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload, developing, monitoring, and reviewing Pathway Plans in collaboration with service users
  • Respond to requests for support and assistance, conducting assessments as required
  • Collaborate with young people, carers, social workers, and other professionals to complete Pathway Assessments
  • Ensure Pathway Assessments and Plans consider individual strengths, areas for development, and action plans for independence
  • Liaise with specialists and agencies, enabling their involvement in the assessment process
  • Assist users and carers in accessing translation, interpretation, or advocacy services
  • Assess social care and accommodation needs in partnership with health and care agencies, considering individual preferences
  • Plan and offer advice and support in areas such as health, education, training, employment, accommodation, financial assistance, youth justice intervention, personal support, family and social relationships, and practical skills
  • Conduct regular reviews of Pathway Plans to ensure they meet identified needs
  • Maintain accurate case records and fulfil statutory duties
  • Operate within budgetary limits and identify gaps in services
  • Take part in office duty arrangements and provide emergency cover as required
  • Maintain ongoing professional development through training and learning opportunities
  • Take lead responsibility in agreed areas of practise

Person Specification:

Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with child care legislation, including the Children Act 1989 and associated guidelines and regulations
  • Understanding of the local authority's responsibilities towards children in care and young people leaving care
  • Knowledge of education provisions, benefits and grants for care leavers, and relevant issues for Asylum Seeking and Unaccompanied children
  • Understanding of accommodation issues faced by care leavers, welfare housing benefits, supported housing, and permanent accommodation
  • Awareness of user involvement in service design and delivery
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by young people transitioning to independence

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Experience conducting high-quality Pathway Assessments and related processes for looked-after children and young people
  • Direct work experience with children in care and leaving care
  • Experience working with young people who have experienced social exclusion

Leadership and Management Framework:

  • Ability to assess, plan, monitor, and evaluate own work within supervision
  • Skills and expertise in specific areas of the service, such as supported housing and welfare benefits
  • Ability to organise workload and prioritise tasks
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Commitment to working with young people and assisting them in achieving their potential

Other:

  • Willingness to work outside of usual office hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Enhanced DBS disclosure is a requirement
