We are seeking a dedicated Highways Structures Assistant Engineer to drive the delivery of a range of highway projects within Manchester City Council's Highways Service team. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to major projects aligned with the Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040 and National Transport Strategies. The Highways Service in Manchester has a key role to play in the evolution of our city, making sure our structural assets are maintained and are high-quality, safe, and sustainable. The Council’s stock of highway bridges (900nr) are maintained to a standard of inspection that meets or exceeds the risk-based interval requirements for the Inspection of Highway Structures. Day-to-day of the role:
- Develop technical schemes that meet current standards and specifications, ensuring compliance with legal and statutory requirements.
- Prepare technical designs, contract documents, and reports for various projects, keeping line management informed of progress.
- Consult with internal and external colleagues, consultants, agencies, and stakeholders to ensure effective project delivery.
- Plan, organise, and implement projects and programmes of work.
- Conduct site inspections of highway structures and supervise both internal and external contractors.
- Implement health and safety procedures, including adherence to CDM regulations 2015.
- Maintain MCC’s structures asset management database.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- HNC / HND in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
- Strong communication skills, capable of effectively conveying information across various platforms to a diverse audience.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and collaboratively across teams engaging with other professionals to seek joined up solutions.
- Analytical skills with an understanding of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, Model Contract for Highway Works, and CDM 2015 Regulations.
- Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to devise creative solutions and make informed decisions.
- Effective project management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Financial management understanding, particularly in relation to design and construction cost implications.
- Proficient in using ICT systems to obtain, analyse, and present data.
