Manchester City Council have an exciting opportunity available for a Building Control Team Leader, to lead an established team on the delivery of national profile developments.

From skyscrapers to stadia redevelopment and wholesale District Centre regeneration, Manchester is the growth hub of the North. Our Building Control Service is supporting this delivery, and when you lead one of our high calibre teams, you’ll be at the heart of it all. 

We’ll look to you to support the Technical Manager in the strategic development and performance of the section, and in implementing initiatives both within the service and at corporate level. In particular, you’ll focus on the financial and operational performance of the Building Control team.

Day to Day of the role:
  • Provide specialist leadership support on technical aspects of the Building Control function, leading decision-making processes on complex technical and legislative issues.
  • Hold specialist responsibility for Fire Safety and Safe at Sports Grounds, including liaising with and representing the Council at Safety Advisory Group (SAG) meetings.
  • Develop guidance in specialist areas to deliver quality development, working closely with the Director of Residential Growth and Housing.
  • Lead negotiations and resolve areas of dispute to deliver a quality service to clients.
  • Work corporately and with other organisations to deliver safe, inclusive, and quality developments in the city.
  • Carry out duties of the Technical Manager in their absence, leading and supporting the management of the Building Control Service.
  • Play a key role in lobbying Government and advising the Council on Building Control matters, especially fire safety, working closely with GMFRS and LABC.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in a related discipline with professional membership (MCABE, MCIOB, MRICS, or equivalent).
  • Registered Building Inspector to at least a Class 3 – Specialist level.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Building Control legislative framework and associated legislation and Council policy.
  • Experience in a Local Authority or Approved Inspector building control organisation.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build and maintain support networks.
  • Analytical skills to understand complex systems and issues.
  • Leadership skills with experience in people management and service delivery planning.
  • Financial management skills and strategic thinking ability.
