- Ensure the provision of robust accounting services for use by managers in planning and controlling the income and expenditure of the charity
- Contribute to the implementation of the charity’s strategic plan developing annual work programmes with the Management Committee as appropriate
- Line manage admin and finance assistants with matrix management support via Directors of Operations.
- Provide timely submission of all external reporting e.g. Charity Commission
- In close consultation with the Chief Executive, establish a relationship with the trustee board so that they have an opportunity to understand fully the key financial issues confronting the charity. Oversee the creation, setting, and tracking of annual and 3-year budgets, working closely with the CEO and Trustees
- Maintain the financial policies, procedures and guidelines to guide the charity’s financial decision-making
- Provide input into the risk management register by identifying risks in conjunction with the Management Committee and Board and establishing suitable plans to reduce/manage risk
- Create and share detailed monthly financial reports with the CEO and Finance Committee members
- Work with our auditors to prepare year-end accounts and audit papers.
- Handle petty cash, VAT claims, bank reconciliations, and month-end tasks
- Approve invoices, purchase orders and ensure BACS payments are made on time.
- Provide budget holders with accurate and timely reports
- Be responsible for creating the monthly payroll reports and payments, liaising with the payroll provider to rectify any anomalies.
- Identify ways to improve the finance function and work proactively with the team to deliver these Keep up to date and be involved in wider organisational issues and share these as appropriate
- Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent)
- Experience of accounts management including budgeting, forecasting, monthly reporting
- Experience of leading and managing a small team, coaching and empowering others to improve performance and ensure everyone contributes and individual voices are heard
- Significant proficiency in financial accounting & reporting, including external statutory reporting and audit and the ability to understand, manage and interpret budgetary and other financial information.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and resources in order to deliver effective financial oversight and critical decision making
- Experience of working within the not-for-profit sector (beneficial not essential)
