About the role:
We are currently looking for a Supervisory Laboratory Aide within the Lab Services department for our client. The aim of this post is to be part of a team providing high quality support services to the laboratory areas across the site alongside providing day-to-day supervision of the Laboratory Aides. You will deputise for the Lab Services Manager as required.

About you:
You should have previous experience of successfully supervising a team along with a working knowledge of the importance of Health and Safety, including manual handling. You will have five GCSE’s (or equivalent) OR equivalent relevant experience and be competent in using Microsoft Office applications.

ORGANISATIONAL ARRANGEMENTS

Accountable to: 1. Laboratory Services Manager
2. Chief Laboratory Officer CLO


Responsible for:
(i) delivering high quality support services as part of a team
(ii) deputising for Laboratory Services Manager
(iii) providing day to day supervision of Laboratory Aides as required

JOB PURPOSE

To be part of a team providing high quality support services to the laboratory areas across the site.
To supervise the team providing high quality support services to the laboratory areas across the site.

To liaise with laboratory personnel in a courteous and professional manner to ensure the job is done efficiently.
To act as deputy for the Lab Services Manager as required.


The post requires the safe handling of industrial equipment and the transportation of heavy loads potential candidates need to be able to meet the physical challenges of the role.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Lab Aide duties include:
? Process glassware and plastics through systems involving the use of industrial washing machines.
? Each day to assist, if required, in the collection of dirty glassware from laboratories and return to Lab Services.
? Operate and observe primary maintenance of equipment within the service area e.g. autoclaves, drying ovens and industrial washing machines.
? Provision of glassware and plastics as requested from laboratories and maintain stock records.
? Provision of sterile water and solutions as requested.
? Ensure that laboratory areas are stocked daily with glassware, tips etc.
? Act as a point of contact for lab staff.
? Assist in the bulk production and sterilization of a range of media and agar plates for use throughout the institute ensuring a smooth and efficient service.
As Supervisory Lab Aide further duties include:
? Use the online Ordering software to maintain supplies and service contracts.
? Support Engineers to Lab Services as required
? Supply clear communication between the Lab Services team and the lab groups across site.
? Train other staff as required.
? Assist with laboratory health and safety.
? Assist in maintaining equipment and supplies.
? Assist in ensuring smooth day-to-day running of the group.
? Assist with general laboratory administration.
? Provide advice and guidance to colleagues and/or customers as required.

Deputise for Lab Services Manager as required:
o Deputise for the Lab Services Manager within internal meetings, such as Health Safety & Wellbeing or speaking to sales reps.
o Manage staff rotas to ensure an effective service is provided across site each day, this would include:
? Operate the monthly pipette servicing clinic.
? Have access to, and update, the lab equipment audit software.
? Supervise the regular laundry collections and returns of Lab Coats
? Support the wider LEAF sustainability developments within the department and Institute such as the collecting of lab plastics for recycling.
? the maintenance of the Institutes Microbiological Safety Cabinets.
? Provide information to CLO or other senior management if requested by them.
? Assist in maintaining a clean and tidy working environment within the department.
? Undertake any other duties, as requested by the Lab Services Manager and/or Chief Laboratory Officer.

• Proactively maintain high standards for laboratory safety, ensuring compliance with the Institute safety Codes of Practice.

• The post, Supervisory Laboratory Aide, Salary in the range of £23,342 - £29,803 per annum (dependent upon experience).

• Salary is paid monthly.

• There are 32 days holiday per year plus Bank Holidays for England.

• Duration of contract: NTL

• 35 hour week.

• There is a probationary period attached to this post of 6 months. It’s standard for many organisations now and consists of two 3-monthly reviews with your line manager.

• You are eligible to join the pension scheme.

• Any offer made would require the successful candidate to undergo a medical clearance. This is arranged with Occupational Health department at the University of Manchester prior to starting employment and consists of a basic medical. This is to address and gain clearance for any potential hazards identified for the role on offer.

• Offer is subject to receipt of satisfactory references and proof of your highest qualification.

• Offer is subject to documented evidence of your right to work in the UK under the Home Office UK Border Agency Regulations.
