Job Title: Payroll ManagerSalary: £45,000Contract: Full-Time | PermanentLocation: ManchesterHybrid: 3 days in the office Team: 3 direct reportsHours: 35 hours per week  This position involves weekly travel to North Wales, with travel expenses to the office fully reimbursed.

We are seeking an experienced Payroll Manager with a thorough understanding of end-to-end payroll processes, ideally within accountancy, bureau, or umbrella settings. This is a fantastic opportunity for a professional who has not only managed payroll but also led and developed teams. You will be joining a well-established and respected firm of chartered accountants based in Manchester, focused on expanding the payroll function.In this role, you’ll manage a portfolio of clients and lead a team of 3 dedicated Payroll Administrators.You’ll be integral to both the daily payroll operations and the future growth of the department, helping to improve efficiency and support the firm’s expansion over the next 12-18 months.Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee a client portfolio, ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing while complying with relevant legislation, including PAYE and NI.
  • Lead, train, and support a team of 3 Payroll Administrators, ensuring efficient workload distribution and meeting operational deadlines.
  • Process payrolls, including manual calculations when necessary, ensuring compliance with tax and pension regulations.
  • Act as the main point of contact for clients, resolving queries and providing exceptional customer service while acting on client feedback.
  • Manage various pension schemes, including NOW and NEST.
  • Contribute to the development of systems and processes, including refining the client journey and introducing new software solutions as needed.
  • Conduct performance reviews and offer coaching and feedback to foster team growth and performance.
What We’re Looking For:
  • At least 3 years of experience as a Payroll Manager, ideally in a payroll bureau environment, although in-house payroll professionals are also encouraged to apply.
  • A commercial mindset with the ability to manage and grow a profitable payroll service.
  • Experience managing payroll for a diverse client portfolio, ensuring service excellence and compliance with payroll regulations.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and mentor a team of payroll professionals.
  • A proactive approach to resolving payroll discrepancies and ensuring clients’ needs are met promptly and efficiently.
  • Experience with payroll software implementation, particularly Iris Star or similar systems.
Key Skills:
  • CIPP or equivalent qualification (or at an equivalent level).
  • Extensive experience delivering fully managed payroll services with a deep understanding of payroll taxes, PAYE, and related regulations.
  • Proven ability to build, manage, and inspire a team of payroll professionals.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain positive client relationships.
  • Skilled at identifying and resolving payroll discrepancies proactively.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while ensuring high customer satisfaction.
  • Experience in payroll system implementation and process improvement.
