Transport Operations Manager Manchester £40,000-£45,000 per annum DOE

We are seeking an experienced and driven Transport Operations Manager to oversee and continually improve the transport operation in Manchester. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the site, vehicles, and drivers remain compliant with legal and company standards, while managing the associated Operator's Licence (O-License).

What will the role involve?

  • Oversee all areas of the transport and ISP operation, including the night planning team and returns function.
  • Lead and manage the operational team to ensure excellent service delivery to both internal and external customers.
  • Proactively manage resources and plan effectively to meet demand.
  • Develop and maintain contingency plans, ensuring these are clearly documented and communicated.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and ensure timely reporting to clients in line with SLAs or agreed timeframes.
  • Foster strong communication practices at all levels.
  • Review and improve current procedures and working practices to enhance efficiency.
  • Ensure optimal staff utilisation and effective task allocation across the operation.
  • Promote a high standard of Health & Safety within the operation, in line with relevant legislation.
  • Uphold site security measures and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Provide regular updates and reports to senior management on operational activities.
  • Support the development and training of staff to encourage skill growth and career progression.
  • Assist in building and maintaining excellent customer service levels.
  • Prepare and submit KPIs and operational reports for senior management.
  • Manage the download, monitoring, and actions relating to driver and vehicle tachographs.
  • Oversee vehicle, FLT, and equipment maintenance and testing schedules.
  • Support recruitment, training, and development of drivers.
  • Mentor and coach operational staff.
  • Control and manage purchasing, cost control, and budget areas including agency labour, equipment, uniforms, training, and testing.
  • Monitor compliance with relevant standards such as CAA regulations, FORS, and ISO9001.
  • Investigate and report on accidents and near misses.
  • Report and control direct operational costs.
  • Assist the Depot Manager in all operational aspects as needed.
  • Act as the FORS champion and lead initiatives as required.
  • Ensure compliance with Health, Safety and Welfare legislation in collaboration with the compliance team.

What will you ideally bring to the role?

  • Strong management background within the logistics or transport industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of logistics and freight forwarding operations.
  • Sound understanding of aviation security.
  • Up-to-date CPC qualification in Road Haulage Operations.
  • Proficient in tachograph analysis software.
  • Solid understanding of Health & Safety practices in a logistics environment.
  • Strong UK geographical knowledge, particularly in the North of England.
  • Experience planning and routing multi-drop vehicle operations.
  • IT literate, with good working knowledge of relevant systems.
  • Ability to manage, prioritise, and delegate effectively.
  • Resilient under pressure and flexible with working hours.
  • Strong customer focus and people management skills.
  • Excellent communication and organisational abilities.
