Role PurposeTo deliver accurate, efficient, and effective payroll services in line with legal requirements. Ensure the accurate maintenance and development of the payroll processing system, detailing payroll processes and procedures. Manage pension and benefit schemes, working closely with HR to maintain accurate and legal records.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Responsible for end-to-end payroll processing, including starters, leavers, changes, adjustments (overtime), SSP, SMP, SPP, and attachment of earnings.
  • Ensure pension scheme deductions and processing of contributions are made in line with scheme requirements, including starters, leavers, and adjustments.
  • Achieve accurate and timely monthly payroll and pay runs.
  • Manage administrative payroll duties, including managing the payroll mailbox.
  • Maintain all necessary payroll records, both computerised and manual, including accurate pension records and auto-enrolment.
  • Participate in monthly wage reconciliation requirements.
  • Deliver audit recommendations within agreed timescales.
  • Ensure payroll processes comply with UK legal requirements.
  • Coach HR colleagues to support payroll processes.
  • Create process flows that meet legal requirements.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for payroll for all managers and colleagues, responding to queries and information requests in a timely manner.
  • Process PAYE deductions and send payroll information to HM Revenue & Customs.
  • Ensure all statutory payments, such as sick pay, maternity, paternity, etc., are calculated and processed in line with legal requirements.
  • Ensure all P45, P60, and P11D data is processed correctly and completed on time.
  • Develop, manage, and enhance payroll processes and controls.
  • Support ad hoc project work and HR administration.

Critical Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required

  • Experience running an accurate and UK legal pay process.
  • Clear understanding of payroll laws, taxes, and PAYE procedures.
  • CIPP qualified or willing to work towards.
  • Ability to be accurate, methodical, and organised.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including active listening, for accurately answering employee questions.
  • Mathematical skills for calculating taxes and employee wages.
  • Computer literacy, especially confidence using office and payroll software such as Excel with VLOOKUP and IRIS Cascade.
  • Initiative and ambition to develop professionally.
  • Self-motivation with organisational skills to meet deadlines.
