Job Opportunity - Principal Ecologist

We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced and passionate Principal Ecologist to lead initiatives that enhance biodiversity and natural capital across Fenland. This is a unique opportunity to provide critical ecological expertise, influence policy, and support sustainable development within one of England's most distinctive regions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advising on the ecological aspects of planning applications, including biodiversity net gain, mitigation strategies, and ecosystem services.
  • Supporting the Council's response to the Environment Act, including biodiversity reporting and local policy updates.
  • Collaborating on large-scale infrastructure projects, such as the Fens Reservoir development.
  • Representing the Council in public inquiries, planning committees, and strategic meetings.
  • Working with partners to promote sustainable land-use practices and ensure compliance with UK and EU environmental legislation.

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • A relevant degree in Ecology or equivalent experience.
  • Proven knowledge of biodiversity net gain, green infrastructure planning, and natural capital in the context of UK land-use planning.
  • At least three years of post-graduate experience in a relevant role, ideally within a local authority or conservation organisation.
  • Strong knowledge of UK and EU wildlife legislation and the English planning system.
  • Membership in CIEEM (or equivalent qualifications/experience).
