Responsibilities for the role of Teaching Assistants

  • Supervise and provide support for learners, including those with special educational needs, ensuring their safety and access to learning
  • Proactively assist with the development and implementation of Individual Learning Plans/targets and EHC plans
  • Establish constructive and professional relationships with young people and interact with them according to their individual needs
  • Assist learners to engage in teaching activities and shared active learning using digital platforms/Google Classroom and assistive technology
  • Provide feedback to learners concerning incremental progress and achievement under the guidance of the teacher/tutor
  • Create and maintain a purposeful and supportive teaching environment, following lesson/curriculum teaching plans
  • Establish clear communication and professional relationships with the teacher/tutor
  • Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher/tutor, to support young people to achieve learning goals
  • Assist with the planning and preparation of learning activities
  • Supervise activities and support learners with their work as directed
  • Monitor learners’ responses to learning activities and accurately record achievement and knowledge, skills and behaviour progress as directed
  • Provide regular and useful feedback to teachers on learners’ incremental achievement and progress in lessons
  • Promote positive and professional behaviour encouraging young people to take responsibility for their behaviour
  • Assist with curriculum displays and the distribution and collection of teaching resources within the classroom
  • Undertake structured and agreed learning activities and teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to learner responses
  • Prepare, maintain and use equipment and resources required to meet the lesson plans and relevant learning activities and assist young people in their use
  • Ensure that the aims in the position summary above are met, achieving high levels of measurable performance: Young people, including those with EHC plans, develop the knowledge, skills and practical competencies to progress to their next steps

Skills and Experience for the Role of Teaching Assistants

  • Experience in supporting teaching and learning in education
  • Experience working with children and young people with Special Education Needs and Disabilities
  • Appropriate level 2 or level 3 supporting teaching and learning qualification or be willing to work towards
  • Literacy and Numeracy at Level 2 or above
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and E&D (Training up-to-date)
  • Current First Aid certificate or willingness to work towards if required
  • Understanding of FE teaching methodology
  • Understanding of the range of teaching activities expected in FE Colleges
  • Able to support teaching delivery to learners of all levels and abilities, and to use flexible and innovative methods of delivery as required
  • Be able to transfer practical experience into useful learning activities
  • A passion for working with children and young people, including those with Special Educational Needs
  • Hold high expectations for young people’s learning and achievement
  • An understanding of recording learner achievement and knowledge, skills and behaviour progress towards individual plans/targets
  • The capacity to use ICT, digital platforms/Google Classroom and assistive
  • technology to improve the quality of teaching provision or be willing to work towards
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people receiving education and training
