Elevation Engineering & Manufacturing are working with a global manufacturing business based in Rotherham in their search for a specialist PLC / Controls Engineer to strengthen their technical team in 2024. You will collaborate closely with the Site Engineering Maintenance Management and production teams to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budget, contributing to key improvement projects aimed at enhancing overall service performance and cost efficiency.

PLC / Control Engineer Key Responsibilities:

  • Focus on reducing plant downtime, improving machinery reliability, and enhancing plant performance by identifying and implementing engineering solutions
  • Coordinate assigned projects from the point of order through to on-site installation and commissioning, ensuring compliance with technical and environmental standards, as well as Health & Safety legislation, within set timelines and budgets
  • Assist with various ongoing and new projects, from process improvements to capital installations
  • Determine project specifications based on operational needs and performance standards, conduct technical studies, review contractor bids, and prepare cost estimates
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team under the guidance of a project manager
  • Manage external contractors, ensuring all tasks are clearly communicated, including health and safety and site/work practices
  • Lead problem-solving initiatives related to maintenance and production processes
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis and support first-line maintenance teams by providing automation expertise
  • Lead and support maintenance and shopfloor teams in continuous improvement activities guiding this with high level PLC / SCADA knowledge
  • Assist in staff training and development in technical skills and processes
  • Improve current manufacturing processes, machinery, and work methods to enhance performance
  • Maintain and update professional and technical knowledge in relevant fields
  • Contribute meaningfully to continuous improvement efforts in the workplace

PLC / Controls Engineer Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills

  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering discipline, such as Electrical, Electronics, or Control Engineering, with strong knowledge of both electrical control systems and mechanical elements
  • Proficient in PLC programming (Allen Bradley advantageous) 
  • Experience working with a variety of plant machinery, PLC control systems, and SCADA systems
  • Experience in designing and specifying PLC-based electrical control systems for bespoke production machinery
  • Familiarity with working in a medium to heavy manufacturing environment is desirable
  • Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills across electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems
