Financial Controller

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Financial Controller to take full ownership of the finance function, overseeing both transactional processes and commercial financial reporting. This is a key leadership role, responsible for ensuring strong financial control, compliance, and driving process improvements to enhance efficiency.

The successful candidate will lead a high-performing finance team, ensuring accuracy in financial reporting while providing strategic insights to senior management. This role will play a critical part in improving finance processes, implementing best practices, and supporting business growth.

What you'll do:

Leadership & Finance Operations

  • Manage and develop the transactional finance team, ensuring the smooth running of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll functions.
  • Provide leadership and guidance, ensuring high levels of accuracy and efficiency across all financial processes.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and professional development within the finance team.

Financial & Commercial Reporting

  • Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely monthly management accounts, providing insightful analysis to senior management.
  • Ensure robust financial planning, including budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis to support strategic decision-making.
  • Monitor and manage cash flow, working capital, and liquidity to ensure the financial stability of the business.
  • Support the wider business with commercial analysis, identifying risks and opportunities to drive profitability.

Process Improvement & Systems Development

  • Identify inefficiencies in finance processes and implement system improvements to enhance automation and reporting capabilities.
  • Work with IT and external providers to upgrade financial systems and integrate new technologies where appropriate.
  • Improve financial reporting processes to provide more accurate and timely insights for decision-making.

Compliance, Risk Management & Controls

  • Ensure strong financial controls are in place, maintaining compliance with statutory regulations, tax requirements, and internal policies.
  • Lead external and internal audit processes, ensuring all financial records are accurate and compliant.
  • Oversee VAT, tax returns, and regulatory filings, ensuring they are completed accurately and submitted within required deadlines.
  • Assess financial risks and implement appropriate strategies to mitigate them.

Business Partnering & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with senior leadership, providing financial insight to support commercial decisions and strategic growth initiatives.
  • Act as the key finance liaison for external stakeholders, including auditors, tax advisors, banks, and regulatory bodies.
  • Support non-finance teams by translating financial data into actionable insights that drive business performance.

What You Need:

  • Be a fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with strong technical expertise and experience in a senior finance role.
  • Proven track record as a Financial Controller or in a similar leadership role, overseeing both transactional finance and commercial reporting.
  • Experience in process improvement and system enhancements, with a focus on automation and efficiency.
  • Strong commercial acumen, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and provide strategic recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and develop a finance team, fostering a culture of high performance and accountability.
  • Excellent understanding of financial controls, compliance, and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence at all levels.
  • A hands-on approach, with a proactive mindset and the ability to operate both strategically and operationally.
