Finance and Payroll Officer

We are seeking a Finance and Payroll Officer to take charge of our sales ledgers and manage UK payroll requirements. This role includes month-end responsibilities, HMRC reporting, and bank reconciliations. The successful candidate will play a key part in maintaining financial health through efficient debt control and ledger management, as well as ensuring payroll is processed accurately and on time.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Collect debts using various methods and maintain accounts to keep overdue debts to a minimum.
  • Run monthly payroll, ensuring accurate salaries and pension contributions.
  • Control direct debit collections and manage bank reconciliations at month-end.
  • Ensure VAT, Intrastat, and other HMRC reporting are completed within deadlines.
  • Liaise with customer service, sales managers, and service departments to resolve invoice queries.
  • Manage legal escalations on overdue invoices and handle liquidations and write-offs.
  • Generate monthly statements and maintain a tidy sales ledger.
  • Process new account applications, including credit checks and account setup.
  • Review and release orders on hold and produce monthly AR reports.
  • Process payroll information, manage tax code changes, and distribute payslips.
  • Submit employer pension contributions and handle related HMRC communications.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Strong grasp of mathematics and accurate numerical application.
  • Ability to identify discrepancies and perform reconciliations.
  • Excellent communication skills with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Efficient self-motivation and organisational skills.
  • Tenacious attitude to debt collection with proven experience.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (particularly Excel) and financial software (ideally M3 and Qlikview).
  • AAT level 2 or 3 qualification or equivalent, with an understanding of double-entry bookkeeping.
  • Essential previous payroll experience.
  • HMRC reporting experience is highly advantageous.
