We have an exciting new opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to be based at our clients offices at Culham in Oxfordshire.

About the Role:

To carry out engineering analysis and design tasks to support the Fusion Futures project, ‘ITER – STEP like Launcher’.
The purpose of the project is to design the ITER equatorial launcher concept using the STEP launcher concept as the basis of the design solution.
The workflow will involve mechanical design in combination with thermal, mechanical, and basic optical analysis to allow for design exploration and optimisation. Models will be developed using CATIA and assessed with hand calculations and Ansys where needed.

The Engineer will be required to design, optimise and analyse the launcher design using multiple mirror assemblies and waveguides external to the port plug. The purpose is to find an optimised STEP like design solution for ITER.

The Engineer will be provided support and guidance on the microwave specific aspects of the design and therefore will mainly be required to carry out the mechanical design and carry out validation calculations to show that the design would work under the environmental constraints of a fusion reactor (specific requirements will be provided).

Key Accountabilities:

Mechanical design - Using of Catia V5 to design and model the designs.
Calculations - Accountable for analyses using both hand calculations and computational software (where applicable) to validate the design.
Documentation - Producing technical reports for analysis tasks.
Processes - Adhering to group and organisational management systems.
Collaboration - Proactively working with the rest of the HCD fusion futures team to ensure all tasks are completed to a high standard.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

Degree in Engineering or other relevant discipline, or equivalent experience.
Experience in the use of Ansys Mechanical.
Experience in the use of Catia V5.
Experience in Mechanism Design.
Good working knowledge of engineering principles.
Good communication and technical writing skills.
Good interpersonal skills.
