Communication Support Worker (SEN School)

About the Role:
We are looking for a compassionate and skilled Communication Support Worker to join our team at a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school in Oldham. As a Communication Support Worker, you will provide essential support to students with communication difficulties, helping them access the curriculum, participate in school activities, and develop their communication skills. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of students with SEN.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to students with communication difficulties, including those with speech and language delays, autism spectrum disorders, or other related needs.
  • Assist students in developing communication strategies, including the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems and strategies.
  • Support students during lessons, helping them understand instructions and express their thoughts and ideas effectively.
  • Promote the use of appropriate language and communication in social settings and classroom activities.
  • Assist teachers in adapting lesson plans and materials to meet the communication needs of individual students.
  • Build positive relationships with students, encouraging their independence and confidence in communication.
  • Observe and monitor students' progress in communication, providing feedback to teachers and contributing to individualized education plans (IEPs).
  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of teachers, therapists, and support staff to deliver an integrated approach to communication support.

Requirements:

  • Experience supporting individuals with communication difficulties, preferably in an SEN setting (training will be provided).
  • Knowledge of communication strategies, including the use of AAC devices, sign language, Makaton, or other communication systems.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping children with communication challenges.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Previous experience working in a school or education setting is an advantage but not essential.
