About the school:
The school is an education setting based for 16 – 25+ years old with Special Educational Needs. It is based on 350 acres of beautiful Dorset countryside. The school operate enterprise activities and vocational teaching methods to bridge the gap between education and employment for young people and adults with SEN in Dorset and the local area. The school focuses on vocations like horticulture, agriculture, equine skills and animal care as well as many more, to enrich the lives and education of its pupils.
About the Role:
As an Equine Teaching Assistant (SEN), you’ll support students with SEN in outdoor equine care and management. Working with a dedicated team, you’ll help develop students' skills, confidence, and personal growth in a beautiful rural setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support students in their practical equine lessons and activities, including horse care, grooming, riding, and stable management.
- Assist the lead instructor in preparing and delivering outdoor-based lessons and tasks.
- Foster an inclusive and positive learning environment, encouraging students to develop their confidence, independence, and vocational skills.
- Provide one-to-one support for students who may need additional assistance with tasks or during lessons.
- Monitor and record students’ progress and development, providing feedback to teaching staff.
- Assist with pastoral care and wellbeing of students in a respectful and supportive manner.
- Ensure health and safety guidelines are adhered to at all times, particularly when working with horses and outdoor equipment.
- Build strong, supportive relationships with students, staff, and external professionals.
Requirements:
- A genuine passion for working with young people with SEN and a desire to make a difference.
- Experience in working with horses or in an equine-related setting (desirable, but not essential).
- Previous experience working in an educational or care setting (desirable).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, empathy, and the ability to engage and motivate students with varying needs.
- A flexible, hands-on approach and a willingness to work outdoors in all weathers.
- A positive attitude and a proactive approach to supporting student learning and development.
