Learning Support Assistant role in a specialist SEMH school in Reading

- Location: Reading- Salary: £95 per day- Start Date: Immediate- Contract: Full-time, Monday to Friday (8:30 am – 3:30 pm), Term Time Only- Duration: Until the end of the academic year, with potential for a permanent role

Milk Education is recruiting for a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) role in a specialist school in Reading, supporting vulnerable children with an EHCP for their mental health. These children have often been exposed to trauma and may be at risk of manipulation or county lines involvement. The school takes a restorative, nurturing approach, focusing on building trust before academic progress – connecting before content.

This role is an excellent stepping stone for aspiring Family Support Workers, Youth Workers, Social Workers, or those interested in safeguarding, psychology, or criminal justice.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Building strong, trusting relationships with students to provide emotional and academic support.
  • Supporting children who have experienced trauma, social exclusion, or difficult home environments.
  • Implementing restorative practices to help pupils develop positive coping strategies.
  • De-escalating challenging behaviours using therapeutic and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Assisting teachers in delivering structured, inclusive lessons tailored to emotional needs.
  • Encouraging resilience, independence, and social skills to help pupils re-engage with education.
  • Working with therapists, pastoral staff, and safeguarding teams to ensure children receive the right interventions.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Graduates in Youth & Community Work, Psychology, Criminology, Social Work, or related fields.
  • Aspiring Family Support Workers, Youth Workers, Social Workers, or Safeguarding Officers.
  • Individuals with a deep understanding of trauma, vulnerability, and mental health challenges.
  • Understanding – Knowing your own why and sincerity base is incredibly important,
  • Those who can offer empathy, patience, and a restorative approach to working with children.
  • Candidates with experience (voluntary or paid) working with young people in challenging circumstances (desirable but not essential – training provided).
