Unqualified Teaching Assistant - Youth and Community, Psychology & Criminology Graduate Maidenhead
This role will provide you with strong foundations in Mental Health and SEND education, supporting your aspirations in Criminal and Youth Justice, particularly if you aim to work in Criminal Justice, Youth Justice, or Social Justice.
We are looking for someone who genuinely wants to advocate for SEMH children, understanding their successes and challenges through a clinical, progressive, and pragmatic lens.
Youth and Community, Psychology & Criminology Graduates in Maidenhead are required for this Learning Support Assistant role, working with children aged 4-6 who have a low tolerance for stress. If you have ambitions in advocacy and social care, this is an excellent starting point.
If you are not a graduate, we would still love to hear from you to discuss your goals and understand your passion and empathy for these sectors.
Raising students' emotional and academic attainment is crucial. The ability to connect with them while also having strong academic content knowledge is key—but connection comes first, especially in Alternative Provisions and Specialist SEND schools.
At the point of referral to the provision, many pupils have additional, associated, and sometimes complex needs, which may include ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), and extreme anxiety, stemming from both inside and outside of school.
The school’s aim is to avoid excluding students, instead finding processes and methods to keep them in education, even if not full-time. Building relationships is key—CONNECT BEFORE CONTENT.
Can you make a student's life just a little bit better today, keep them safe, and show them the value of education?
- Building relationships as much as each student allows, enabling you to improve their academic attainment
- Supporting children in reintegrating into school and the wider community
- Using a Restorative approach to aid each child's education and academic development—but only once you have built a connection
- Working in a specialist SEMH classroom, with 4-12 children at a time, depending on their emotional state and needs
- Managing some instances of anti-social behaviour, which may take time to adjust to—this is all part of supporting society’s most vulnerable children. Full training and support are provided by the school’s excellent training system
- Exposure to a variety of therapies and holistic processes—every small step of progress is a success
- Working with students with high cognitive intelligence, SEMH and Autism needs, including Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) and Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD)
- Encouraging positive engagement and a sense of acceptance—talking therapy may not always be effective, so alternative approaches are required
