Job Role:
Our clients are seeking an experienced Electrical HV Technician to join the team at their Top Tier Chemical Plant based in Runcorn. This specialist role is responsible for maintaining and operating high-voltage equipment in line with High Voltage (HV) Safety Rules and established maintenance practices. The position involves managing planned maintenance, commissioning, fault-finding, and providing technical support, all with a focus on HV equipment. No call-out duties are required for this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain high-voltage distribution assets, following HV Safety Rules, established maintenance principles, and reliability-centred maintenance studies.
  • Obtain and maintain authorisations on all switchgear types of the High Voltage Distribution Network (SAP)
  • Oversee and manage first-line responses to trips on the High Voltage Distribution Network.
  • Define testing regime to verify condition of HV Distribution Equipment and verify its suitability or otherwise, to be fit for orderly return to service under HV Safety Rules
  • Complete testing under Sanction for Test
  • Manage interface with external specialist contractors to provide ancillary support. This will include liaison with contractors and management of their activities on site.
  • Manage lookahead within SAP for ancillary support services such as battery systems, fire alarms, lighting, heating and condition monitoring (thermography and partial discharge).
  • Deliver maintenance tasks as outlined in third-party service level agreements and detailed schedules.
  • Provide technical support and commissioning for projects involving changes to the HV Distribution Network.

Experience:

Plant Knowledge & Understanding

  • Power & Rectifier Transformers, Tap Changers, Fault Limiting Reactors.
  • Power Factor Correction Capacitors, Various Switchgear Types (Fixed, Removable, Oil-Filled, Air, Vacuum, SF6).
  • High Voltage Cable Systems, Current & Voltage Transformers, DC Battery Systems.
  • Fire Protection Systems (CO2, Deluge Water).

Cable Systems Knowledge

  • Cable Support & Cleating Requirements.
  • Cable Failure Mechanisms.

Protection Systems Knowledge

  • Alarm & Trip Systems for Fault Isolation.
  • Overcurrent & Earth Fault Relays (Induction & Numeric).
  • Unit, Motor, Differential, and Generator Protection Systems.

Key Skills:

  • Strong technical knowledge of electrical distribution and protection systems.
  • Ability to manage maintenance activities and projects effectively.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting and fault diagnosis.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills, especially when liaising with contractors.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • HNC in Electrical Engineering (preferred) or a minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical distribution.
  • Time-served Technician with a strong understanding of electrical distribution systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of HV Safety Rules and hazard control measures associated with the HV System.
  • Familiarity with Low Voltage Electrical Isolation and Permit to Work systems.
  • Senior Authorised Person within HV testing
