The Management Accountant will provide line management and day to day leadership & support to a team of Finance Officers overseeing their work, providing guidance, and ensuring the effective functioning of the team. They will conduct regular performance reviews and provide constructive feedback and identify training and development needs for their team enhancing their skills and performance. They will report directly to the Senior Management Accountant.

Description

The Management Accountant will:

  • Support the Senior Management Accountant in the budget setting process, provide direction to Finance Officers, and ensure all growth, savings, and changes are captured.
  • Co-ordinate tasks and liaise with the Finance Business Partnering (FBP) Team as required.
  • Lead the month-end processes, ensuring completion according to the timetable.
  • Monitor key monthly procedures (virement reconciliations, contingencies, central reports), and produce financial commentary explaining variances.
  • Prepare accurate monthly budget monitoring reports for Business Units, including capital, grant, and savings appendices.
  • Produce required reports, including Joint Independent Audit Committee (JIAC) reports, and co-ordinate non-statutory returns (e.g., Uplift, Covid).
  • Provide guidance on workforce plan reconciliations to ensure timely and accurate pay records.
  • Monitor team KPIs, review performance, and ensure deadlines are met. Address discrepancies and support team members as needed.
  • Act as the single point of contact (SPOC) for ad-hoc data requests, including Freedom of Information requests, co-ordinating information provision.
  • Champion Business Intelligence for Management Accounting, contributing to the development and maintenance of financial reports and systems (e.g., Oracle).
  • Lead system testing (UAT) during upgrades and recommend new procedures as needed.
  • Take responsibility for continuous improvement, leading projects, and identifying opportunities to improve budget setting processes for future financial years.
  • Manage and develop Finance Officers, setting objectives, providing feedback, and ensuring high performance. Deputise for the Senior Management Accountant when required.

Profile

The Management Accountant will be/have:

  • Qualified Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies (C.C.A.B.) or CIMA accountant with full membership.
  • Significant and recent management accounting experience.
  • Up to date with current accounting issues and good, practical accounting knowledge.
  • Demonstrate IT literacy including advanced Excel, with significant experience of large, complex ERP systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to use a range of communication techniques.
  • Experience of building strong working relationships and establishing personal credibility with senior managers and budget holders.
  • Understand personal and professional strengths and development needs and be able to evidence the steps taken to enhance your continuing professional development.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a highly pressurised environment.
  • Experience of leading a team and staff management.
