Job Purpose

To undertake environmental and horticultural maintenance duties across the city, delivering front-line services to ensure parks and green spaces remain clean, safe, and attractive. The role involves general gardening, environmental upkeep, and improvement works as directed.

Key Duties and ResponsibilitiesHorticultural and Environmental Maintenance
  1. Carry out defined horticultural maintenance tasks in parks and other green open spaces, including:
    • Operating horticultural machinery and equipment, including ride-on mowers (following appropriate training).
    • Using hand tools for gardening and maintenance tasks.
    • Emptying litter and dog waste bins, ensuring surrounding areas are kept clean.
  2. Undertake general gardening and environmental maintenance duties, such as:
    • Hedge cutting, pruning, and grass cutting.
    • Litter picking and removal of fly-tipped waste and other rubbish.
  3. Perform certain duties independently, such as emptying bins, litter picking, and general gardening tasks.
  4. Conduct improvement works, including:
    • Preparing and painting outdoor fixtures.
    • Installing temporary fencing, signage, and dog waste bins.
Operational Responsibilities
  1. Adhere to all Safe Systems of Work, Health and Safety Guidelines, Policies, and Procedures.
  2. Engage with clients as required in a professional and courteous manner.
  3. Ensure accurate documentation and record-keeping, including issuing 'Waste Transfer Notes’ in compliance with relevant legislation.
  4. Drive and maintain vehicles, ensuring they remain clean and in good working condition.
  5. Participate in training and development activities to enhance skills and competencies as necessary.
  6. Work towards achieving performance targets aligned with Service Level Agreements.
General Duties and Responsibilities
  • Follow all Council Policies and Procedures, including those related to:
    • Health and safety.
    • Equality, diversity, and inclusion.
    • Safeguarding procedures.
    • Financial instructions, procurement, and commissioning.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as agreed with the manager.
  • Be aware of and follow the Service Business Continuity Plan when required.
