Interim Laboratory Manager (Microbiology)

Location: Shropshire

Day Rate: £180-200/day

Duration: 3 months

Our client is one of the UK’s largest independent agricultural testing companies, servicing the whole of UK and Ireland from their base in Shropshire. They pride themselves on their reputation of providing chemical analytical testing that is quick, accurate and always reliable.

To support the existing management team, we are seeking a talented Laboratory Manager to join the team on an interim basis. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic business that requires an experienced laboratory manager to support the delivery of their operational objectives.

The role:

  • To manage the allocation of staff to suitable areas so that all analyses are completed within agreed time scales, to all quality criteria and in the most cost effective manner;
  • To be responsible for the appointment of new personnel, and ensure that adequate training is given to all personnel to enable them to perform their designated tasks efficiently and safely, and where appropriate, to carry out disciplinary procedures;
  • To ensure that, at all times, the QA regulations are met with regard to operations, procedures, policies and equipment within the routine analytical areas and work is carried out to a standard which will ensure continued accreditation to UKAS;
  • To participate in a full programme of Lab Audits in collaboration with the Compliance manager.
  • To ensure that good standards are maintained with regards to safety and environmental standards (e.g. accident reporting, COSHH, waste disposal);
  • To monitor the allocated work and interpret data generated and implement corrective action for any actual or anticipated deviations from key objectives or timelines.
  • To implement corrective action for any deviations or deficiencies with staff, projects, equipment, safety or compliance and enforce agreed appropriate corrective action;
  • To examine the procedures and technologies currently employed and suggest improvements as necessary. Check and validate when required all analytical work undertaken to ensure only the highest quality analytical data is presented for reporting.
  • To ensure that you have a thorough understanding of every area of analysis within the operation both current and in the future so that you can provide support to all those techniques and the staff undertaking them
  • To manage the annual leave for the laboratory staff ensuring sufficient coverage is maintained.
  • To monitor the level of overtime and authorise, in conjunction with the Business or Site Manager, any required overtime.
  • To take responsibility for all HR processes in the Lab Operations teams, including disciplinary issues, internal disputes, support for the Supervisors and managing leave and sick absence

The person:

  • Degree qualified, or equivalent, in a science-based subject (microbiology, chemistry, food chemistry/science)
  • Detailed understanding of microbiology analytical techniques with experience in a commercial, high throughput laboratory
  • Proven experience of working within a UKAS accredited laboratory
  • IT literate
  • Strong communication skills, both written & verbal
  • Ability to work independently using good judgement, and as a team player.
  • Resourceful, reliable and self-motivated.
  • Demonstrable leadership skills with a strong work ethic.
  • Exceptional organisational skills with a high consideration to detail and accuracy.
  • Adept at time management and able to work with deadlines.
  • Flexible, accommodating and positive approach.
  • Use initiative to achieve results and take ownership of workload.
  • Demonstrate resilience under pressure
