Morson Talent are working on behalf of a major player within the Energy Sector who have a current requirement for a Chemical Safety & COSHH Advisor to join an established site-based team in Somerset. This is a uniquely interesting opportunity to contribute towards one of Europe’s largest infrastructure Projects.

Overview

  • The Chemical Safety & CoSHH Advisor will use their expertise to support excellence in the management of chemical hazards on a complex and busy construction site. You will help identify where a proposed chemical may impact the environment, occupational health, safety or fire risks. You will work with subject matter experts in these areas to support risk assessments, mitigation design and approvals to ensure that effective controls are in place. As the project progresses, it is anticipated that the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations will apply and you will play a vital role in supporting compliance.
  • You will also support contract partners in developing their chemical risk assessment capabilities, thus supporting the project’s ambition to improve safety performance across the construction industry.

Framework & Boundaries

  • You will work within the Site Environment Team, reporting to the Site Environmental Engineering Lead. You will, however work closely with fire safety and incident response professionals in the wider team and with health and safety professionals.
  • The post holder will develop a ‘one-team’ working relationship with all key stakeholders and external stakeholders always providing clear communication and support to internal departments, programme teams and external stakeholders ensuring emergency arrangements are suitable and sufficient against the current and future risk profile.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Providing support to safety, health, fire, environment and emergency response teams
  • Support the management and assurance of the Site’s chemical inventory - supporting compliance with regulatory requirements including REACH and COMAH
  • Assess contractor requests to bring products to site and ensuring that Subject Matter Experts are consulted as required
  • Support the delivery and roll out of a new chemical management system
  • Supporting the development of an effective Chemical Management Community of Best Practice across the organisation


Qualifications & Experience
Essential

  • A degree or equivalent in a scientific discipline
  • Experience working with chemicals and understanding the principles of controlling the risk from hazardous chemicals
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations and guidance
  • Ability to provide strategic and tactical advice to multiple stakeholders understanding and acknowledging different stakeholder’s needs.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to manage several concurrent activities.
  • A dynamic individual who is a team player that is pro-active and flexible and who can work on their own initiative across a broad range of issues to review compliance.

Desirable

  • Awareness of DSEAR, fire safety and/or occupational health
  • Experience of developing or managing chemical inventories or approved chemical lists
  • Experience in delivery of training on COSHH awareness, handling, transfer, chemical spill, emergency response
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage own workload and priorities to meet the team’s goals and targets.
  • The ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
