Social, Emotional and Mental Health Learning Support Assistant

Are you passionate about positively impacting the lives of young children with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs? We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Needs Learning Support Assistant to join a dedicated Special needs school based in the lovely borough of Berkshire.

Position: Special Needs Learning Support Assistant

Contract Type: Long-term, starting immediately or January 2025, with the option of a permanent contract at Easter the academic year.

Role & Responsibilities/About Role:

  • Work closely with the teaching team to support the educational and emotional needs of young children with SEMH in the classroom setting.

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to students, delivering tailored interventions to enhance their learning experience.

  • Assist in creating and implementing individualised education plans (IEPs) to address each child's unique needs and learning goals.

  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment, promoting social interaction, emotional regulation, and confidence-building activities.

  • Use positive behavior management techniques and de-escalation strategies to address challenging behaviors and emotional difficulties.

  • Support students in developing their communication skills, social interactions, and independence in various daily activities.

  • Collaborate with parents, guardians, and relevant professionals to ensure consistent and effective support for each child's well-being and progress.

  • Observe and record students' progress, behaviors, and achievements, maintaining accurate records for assessment and reporting purposes.

  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to stay updated with best practices in SEMH support and special education.

Skills/Experience:

  • Experience working with young children with SEMH needs, either in a school setting or a related environment.

  • Empathy, patience, and a nurturing approach to build strong and supportive relationships with students.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and external professionals.

  • Knowledge of positive behavior support strategies and techniques for managing challenging behaviors.

  • A proactive and adaptable attitude to meet the dynamic needs of the classroom and individual students.

  • Understanding of safeguarding and the ability to maintain a safe and secure learning environment.
