My client is seeking a Payroll and Pensions Lead to oversee the compliance and operational success of their Trust Payroll process. This role is crucial in ensuring all payroll and pension matters are handled efficiently and in compliance with relevant regulations. The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues within the Trust to support all schools and develop a programme of improvement and best practice.

Day-to-Day of the Role:
  • Ensure Trust processes and practices regarding payroll and pension administration comply with relevant rules and regulations.
  • Act as the Trust’s subject matter expert on all matters relating to payroll, including UK income tax, national insurance legislation, and workplace pension rules.
  • Champion payroll compliance with internal stakeholders across the Trust using specialist knowledge and understanding of day-to-day payroll operations.
  • Regularly review payroll and pension service providers to ensure ongoing value for money.
  • Monitor accuracy of payroll data and timeliness of submissions across the Trust.
  • Provide guidance on complex payroll, tax, and pension cases.
  • Monitor and process new starter and leaver information on payroll software and relevant pension platforms.
  • Take ownership of the Central Team’s financial transactions, including supplier invoices, bank reconciliations, and payroll journals.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • A recognised qualification in payroll (e.g., CIPP).
  • Proven experience in a payroll role, with strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in a school or academy trust environment is highly desirable.
  • Excellent knowledge of faster payments/BACS, auto-enrolment, payroll journals, various pension providers, and related processes such as salary sacrifice and benefits & expenses.
  • Strong communication, presentational, organisational, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines, managing and prioritising time effectively.
  • Self-starter, able to work independently and proactively to overcome obstacles.
