THE ROLE:
The Process Engineer will be primarily involved in the overall design of Blast Furnace systems and equipment, and development activities associated with the Blast Furnace, especially de-carbonisation. The role will involve understanding and assessing the Blast Furnace operationally and chemically, along with ancillary process plant associated with the Furnace. The engineer will ensure that the blast furnace is technically and operationally acceptable and operates safely in accordance with local regulations. The engineer will also be expected to cover a wide-ranging role being able to provide process knowledge during the Sales phase all the way through to the "hands-on" approach during the commissioning of the plant.
MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Equipment design o Ensuring correct equipment selection and design at the basic engineering stage of the contract for both the blast furnace and associated equipment. During this stage adequacy of the equipment via the use of simulation and calculations will be utilized to ensure the process can achieve the criteria stipulated within the contract.
- Drawing Generation o The creation of Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs) and Process flowsheets (PFD's) are a key requirement. These documents are fed into engineering and used as a fundamental to the success of the project and the engineer must have a basic knowledge around symbol selection, piping requirements and instrumentation selection.
- Safety Studies o Risk assessments are a requirement at all stages of the project lifecycle within the business, standard guidance for each of these studies will be provided and adhered to by the engineer. A basic knowledge around Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP) and Layer of Protections Analysis (LOPA) is advantageous
- Study/Report Writing o Being able to analyse operating data and produce recommendations/solutions in a clear and concise study document/report is deemed an essential part of the Process Engineers role.
- Commissioning o At the end of the project it is expected that the process engineer attends site for the starting up of the project. The Process Engineer will be expected to support the commissioning manager in a role as commissioning engineer. This experience will supplement the applicants office-based knowledge with actual physical operating experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Strong communication skills at all levels - the ability to adapt style and approach when working with different stakeholders.
- An understanding of basic provess skills e.g. Piping and Instrument Diagrams and Process Flow Sheets
- A basic understanding of contract negotiation and how process engineer input effects things such as Performance Guarantees.
- Health and Safety: Understanding the Health and Safety implications of work being carried out. An understanding of HAZOP and LOPA procedures.
- IT Literate with all department and business tools, including MS Office Suite and MS Project
