The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Law and Governance Service at the City Council. A qualified solicitor is required to join their Public Protection and Employment section to undertake adult social care legal work.

The successful candidate will work alongside two other experienced solicitors in this field and will provide advice and support to the Council and external clients (when applicable) in relation to a broad and varied caseload.

The post-holder will be based at the Council's new City Hall building and will also have the opportunity to work on an agile (home working) basis.

Key Responsibilities

  • To provide responsive and high-quality legal advice and support to the Council (and external clients when applicable), in relation to adult social care matters.
  • To prepare cases for the Court of Protection and to advise generally upon the conduct of each case.
  • To deal with correspondence relating to on-going proceedings, or other correspondence received within the team.
  • To compile court bundles.
  • To liaise with external professionals as required.
  • To represent the Council at Court hearings.
  • To instruct and attend Counsel in relation to complex cases.
  • To provide legal advice to client teams on adult social care matters including the Care Act 2014, immigration, ordinary residence, deprivation of liberty, mental health, mental capacity, persons with physical difficulties, persons with learning difficulties, human rights matters and adult safeguarding.
  • To continually monitor the inception of new legislation and case-law relevant to the post-holder’s areas of practice and to promptly advise on the implications arising.
  • To carry out any other legal work as the exigencies of the service dictate.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Qualified solicitor with a valid practising certificate.
  • Experience of undertaking adult social care legal work is desirable.
  • Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to share and obtain information.
  • Able to draft detailed, complex and lengthy legal documents.
  • Able to make decisions and reach conclusions, which balance competing objectives and resources and to be resourceful in the face of challenges.
  • Able to provide excellent customer service by being able to deliver high quality tailored services to meet needs and exceed expectations.
  • Able to work effectively within a busy team environment, or independently.
  • Able to work at a fast pace and cope well with higher levels of workload.
  • Able to establish direction and influence others towards the achievement of the Council’s relevant objectives.
