We are seeking a Senior Information Governance Officer to join our Legal and Democratic Services team within the Law and People Directorate. This pivotal role focuses on ensuring the Council adheres to all information governance obligations, including data protection and freedom of information requests. The ideal candidate will be a key advisor and leader in developing and implementing robust Information Governance systems across the Council.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Serve as a focal point for guidance and advice on all information governance matters, including data protection and requests under the Freedom of Information Act and Environmental Information Regulations.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Information Governance systems to ensure compliance with legal obligations.
  • Train and educate colleagues across the Council in Information Governance, continually raising awareness and understanding of the subject matter.
  • Manage and process requests for information disclosure through Subject Access Requests or other statutory requests.
  • Deputise for the Legal and Information Governance Manager on Information Governance matters, including acting as Data Protection Officer when required.
  • Provide expert advice on data protection and freedom of information legislation to colleagues at all levels.
  • Support the Council’s information risk management process by identifying and addressing information governance risks.
  • Keep abreast of legislation, best practices, and developments in Information Governance, advising the Council to ensure ongoing compliance and improvement.
  • Develop and deliver Information Governance training and awareness programs using various mediums such as direct presentations, e-learning, and regular communications.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in Information Governance, particularly within a public sector or legal environment.
  • Strong understanding of data protection laws, freedom of information laws, and associated legislation.
  • Experience in developing and implementing Information Governance systems and controls.
  • Excellent communication and advisory skills, capable of dealing with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to manage complex data protection and information governance issues.
  • Relevant professional qualifications in Information Governance or related fields are highly desirable.
