Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

Day-to-Day of the Role of a Safeguarding Lead :

  • Take lead responsibility for safeguarding and child protection, including online safety and understanding the filtering and monitoring systems in place.
  • Participate in strategy discussions and inter-agency meetings, contributing to the assessment of children.
  • Advise and support other members of staff on adult and child welfare, safeguarding, and child protection matters.
  • Liaise with relevant agencies such as the local authority and police.
  • Manage all levels of safeguarding incidents as outlined in the safeguarding policy and workflow.
  • Record and manage safeguarding concerns on CPOMS, detailing incidents and demonstrating the identification and management of risk.
  • Refer cases to external agencies such as PREVENT, social services, mental health support providers, and other support services.
  • Undertake regular and mandatory training to stay informed of the latest guidance and procedures.

Required Skills & Qualifications for the position of a Designated Safeguarding Lead:

  • Level 3 Safeguarding qualification.
  • Experience of working with young people and families with complex needs, including those with SEND.
  • Experience of liaising with external agencies.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Strong organisational and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to prioritise conflicting demands.
  • Experience of assessing and managing risk and vulnerability with a particular emphasis on safeguarding.
  • A strong role model for young people with a collaborative and solution-focused attitude.
  • Knowledge of relevant safeguarding legislation and best practices including the KCSIE guidance and Working Together to Safeguard Children.
  • Willingness to undertake any training required for the role and a strong commitment to personal continued professional development.
