The (Weekend) Machine Shop supervisor is responsible for the day to day safe and efficient running of the machine shop. The role involves organising, coordinating and supervising employees and processes within the machining department to ensure effective and efficient operation that meets safety, quality and production standards.
Rate of pay - £30 per hour (13 Weeks probationary period CIS / Umbrella)
Shifts - Friday to Sunday, 07:00 17:30
You will be required to completed 3 weeks initial training with the day shift (39 hrs Monday Thursday 7am -5pm)
Supervision of Machine Shop Operations
- Oversee day-to-day operations in the machine shop, ensuring productivity, safety, and quality standards are met.
- Monitor the progress of projects, working to schedules and adjusting resources as necessary to meet deadlines.
- Coordinate and assign tasks to workers based on project requirements, worker skills, and production priorities.
- Ensure all operators use the Steel Project PLM system to track and monitor the workflow through the workshop.
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of CNC machine operators.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide feedback, and identify training needs to improve skill sets.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels by liaising with other machine shop supervisor to manage overtime and leave requests.
- Ensure all inspection processes are adhered by to ensure parts meet project specifications, quality standards, and industry regulations.
- Raise and address any non-conformance issues.
- Collaborate with the quality assurance team to identify and rectify defects or inconsistencies.
- Ensure the Inspection Test Plan (ITP) is filled out correctly.
- Ensure all operators adhere to and use the current traceability system, Steel Projects PLM.
- Champion safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all employees.
- Conduct regular safety inspections, risk assessments reviews, toolbox talks and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Facilitate safety training sessions and ensure all team members are aware of safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Co-ordinate with supervisors from other departments, to ensure the flow of material and information from and to those departments is flawless.
- Establish and ensure that there are clear binary indicators set up to ensure the flow of material through the machine shop.
- Ensure all machine shop equipment are in good working condition by adhering to regular cleaning, maintenance and inspections.
- Coordinate with the maintenance team to address any equipment breakdowns or malfunctions promptly. Raising maintenance issues via Mango.
- Collaborate with other machine shop supervisor, and other departments to develop and implement production schedules.
- Monitor workflow to ensure timely completion of projects within budget constraints.
- Manage production changes and adjustments to accommodate project variations or unexpected challenges.
- Maintain accurate records of daily production activities, work orders, and quality checks. This will be carried out using the Steel Projects PLM system.
- Identify areas for improvement in production processes, equipment utilisation, and workforce efficiency.
- Implement lean manufacturing principles and best practices to optimize workshop operations.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement by encouraging employee input and innovation.
- Integrate, monitor and feedback the Steel project PLM system.
- Act as a liaison between machine shop staff, management and other stakeholders to ensure clear communication and understanding of project requirements.
- Attend meetings to discuss project updates, resolve issues, and plan future work.
- Carry out diligent handovers with the weekday supervisor to update on production progress and issues that have occurred.
- Line report to the Manufacturing Manager
- Interface with the Head of Operations and other Senior Leaders
- Liaise with all departments as and when required.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage with team members, management, clients, and stakeholders.
- Ability to lead, motivate, and mentor a team while fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.
- Strong organizational skills to manage projects, resources, and deadlines efficiently.
- Capability to provide clear instructions, feedback, and training to enhance team performance.
- Expertise in CNC machining processes, tools, and equipment, with hands-on experience from a machine shop background.
- IOSH or NEBOSH managing safety course preferred
- Comprehensive knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations. An understanding of the Health and Safety at work Act 1974
- Experience in writing and reviewing risk assessments and Job Safety Analysis.
- Keen attention to detail to ensure all machined components meet project specifications and quality standards. Again, a working knowledge of various standards in particular ISO 1090 and NSSS
- Knowledge / experience of ITPs
