1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEN 1:1 Teaching Assistant to join our supportive team at a well-established primary school in the heart of Wakefield. The role is based within the Primary schools Nursery Department, where you will be providing 1:1 support to a non-verbal child with Special Educational Needs (SEN). This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in a young child's educational journey.

Key Responsibilities:

  • 1:1 Support: Provide individual support to a non-verbal child, ensuring they are fully engaged in classroom activities and able to access the curriculum.
  • Adapting Lessons: Work closely with the class teacher to ensure lessons are adapted to meet the specific needs of the child, including using visual aids, communication tools (e.g., Makaton, PECS), and sensory activities.
  • Personalised Care: Help create a supportive environment where the child feels comfortable, secure, and able to participate to the best of their ability.
  • Communication Support: Utilise alternative communication methods (e.g., sign language, picture systems, or tech-based solutions) to support the child in expressing themselves.
  • Promote Social Integration: Encourage the child's social development by supporting positive interaction with peers and ensuring they are included in group activities.
  • Progress Monitoring: Work alongside the school's SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) to track the child's progress and implement strategies for continued development.

Key Requirements:

  • Experience working with children, particularly those with special educational needs (SEN).
  • A strong understanding of non-verbal communication and experience using communication tools (e.g., Makaton, PECS, or similar).
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to support children with additional needs.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, collaborating with teachers, SENCOs, and other support staff.
  • Previous experience in an educational setting is desirable but not essential.
