About the Role:
Engage Education is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Pastoral Support Assistant to join a team in Wakefield, working in the school’s pastoral department. This role focuses on supporting students who need a safe space to manage their emotions and behaviours. The ideal candidate will be patient, nurturing, and committed to helping students overcome challenges, particularly those related to Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including attachment and trauma. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in children's lives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one or small group support to students who are unable to attend class due to emotional or behavioural challenges.
- Offer a calm and supportive environment where students can diffuse and re-regulate their emotions.
- Build positive, professional relationships with students, demonstrating unconditional positive regard.
- Support the wider pastoral team in developing strategies to promote positive behaviour and emotional well being.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), and other school staff.
Essential Qualifications/Experience:
- Previous experience working with children or young people, especially those with SEMH, attachment, and trauma-related needs, is preferred.
- A strong sense of behaviour management and the ability to de-escalate challenging behaviour is key.
- Experience in a similar role (youth work, behaviour mentor, SEN assistant) is an advantage.
- Patience, empathy, and an understanding approach to working with children in crisis.
- Hold a full UK driving licence and have access to your own vehicle.
