Do you have experience managing challenging behaviour and the skills to de-escalate situations effectively? The Role – SEN Teaching Assistant (SEMH Specialist)

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will be working with primary-aged students (4 to 11 years old) who require additional support due to SEMH needs and challenging behaviour. You will be an integral part of the classroom, helping to create a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing tailored 1:1 and small-group support for students with SEMH needs
  • Managing challenging behaviour using positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with students to help them engage in learning
  • Supporting students in developing social and emotional skills to boost confidence and self-regulation
  • Collaborating with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to implement effective learning strategies
  • Encouraging positive interactions to foster a nurturing and inclusive atmosphere
What We’re Looking For:
  • Experience working with students with SEMH needs (in schools, alternative provisions, or similar settings)
  • Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Training in de-escalation techniques (e.g., Team Teach, MAPA – desirable but not essential)
  • A patient, empathetic, and resilient approach to supporting children
  • A passion for making a difference in the lives of students with additional needs
