Senior / Principal Civil & Structural Engineer - Rail

Our client is seeking a highly skilled and driven Senior / Principal Engineer to join their Rail Structures team in Watford. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a leading UK engineering consultancy, working on a diverse portfolio of rail projects across London Underground and Network Rail infrastructure.

The role provides exposure to multiple projects and clients simultaneously, allowing you to bring your expertise to a variety of challenging tasks.

With flexible working arrangements, this position requires a minimum of 3-4 days per week in the office.

Experienced Senior / Principal Engineer who can lead rail projects through their full lifecycle, from initial tender to detailed design. This role will require you to manage both the technical and commercial aspects of projects, acting as the key point of contact for clients and ensuring high-quality outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a team of engineers and technicians at all levels, to deliver rail infrastructure design packages and multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Oversee the production of design packages at the concept, tender, and detailed stages of projects.
  • Collaborate with Rail management to expand service offerings for existing clients and help secure new business in the region.
  • Ensure efficient project delivery, including budget management, compliance with internal and external processes, and resource allocation.
  • Support business development and marketing efforts while providing coaching and mentoring to junior team members.

About You:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status with a relevant professional body (e.g., ICE or IStructE).
  • Strong technical background with extensive experience in designing rail structures, stations (including platform upgrades), bridges, culverts, retaining structures, and foundations.
  • Proven experience managing projects from tender through to delivery, including engineering drawings, statutory approvals, and project administration.
  • Excellent client relationship skills, with the ability to build on and maintain strong partnerships.
  • Extensive experience in delivering projects under tight deadlines, especially within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Strong leadership abilities, with experience guiding teams and managing project delivery.
  • Effective communication skills (both written and verbal), adapting to different audiences.
  • Proven experience in team management, balancing workload, planning resources, and promoting employee development and well-being.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, with the ability to influence strategic decisions within defined parameters.
