Bridge Operations and Training Manager | St Budeaux, Plymouth | 30 hours per week (flexibility on working days and times can be discussed)| £28,170 per annum, progressing to £30,911 per annum

Our client is responsible for the management, operation, maintenance and administration of the two crossings over the River Tamar – Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry. With approx. 44,000 vehicles travelling with them every day, they play an important part in the local infrastructure, creating a link between Plymouth, Devon and South East Cornwall.

No two days are the same. The team must confidently manage incidents, breakdowns, maintenance, changes to weather and concerns for welfare, to name but a few, all whilst providing safe and efficient crossings for commuters. They are looking for an experienced Operations and Training professional who can provide consistent supportive training and updated operating procedures for the team in the control room.

Whilst you generally work Monday to Friday there are times when flexibility will be required to attend emergency situations or incidents out of hours. There may be occasions where there is a requirement to cover a night shift in exceptional circumstances. Further details available on request. 

Are you the right person for the job?

In the first instance, you must be able to demonstrate:

  • Level 4 qualification or above or a certificate in education and training or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • IOSH managing safely is advantageous. 
  • Understanding of health and safety issues and management techniques within a similar environment.
  • A positive and flexible approach to deal with change, pressure or difficult situations.
  • Ability to respond positively to changing operational demands.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a good working relationship amongst colleagues.
  • A high level of accurate and objective reporting, with complimentary writing ability, including a strong competency in using MS office software including Word, Excel and MS databases (or equivalents).
  • Be pro-active and assertive, with a positive and approachable attitude.  

Experience of:

  • Working in operations management with a strong focus on customer service delivery.
  • Significant experience of design and delivery of training to large and small groups. 
  • Conducting and reviewing risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work. 
  • Development of standard operating procedures. 
  • Recent knowledge of training in the lifelong learning sector. 
  • Be pro-active and assertive, with a positive and approachable attitude.  
  • Practical experience of applying internal policies and working as part of a team.

What will your role look like?

The main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Under direction of the Bridge Manager, plan, coordinate, manage and monitor operational staff training requirements to meet business objectives and current legislative requirements alongside the bridge operation, ensuring the following are met: 
    • Training Needs Analysis
    • Development of courseware
    • Development of training documentation
    • Assessment criteria
    • Training Records
    • Data capture
  • Under direction of the Bridge Manager, lead the delivery, coordination, and development of staff induction programs.  
  • Develop and maintain departmental standard operating procedure under the guidance of the Bridge Manager.  
  • Be the first line focal point for departmental HS&E issues and activity, this includes reviewing and updating bridge operations specific risk assessments, safe systems of work and emergency procedures when required.
  • Monitor performance of operational staff and outputs in-line with business KPI’s and carrying out ad-hoc inspections and audits.
  • Promote good working practices in accordance with legislation, internal policies, and procedures.
