Job Description:

We are looking for a skilled Cook to join the catering team at an NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing nutritious and balanced meals for patients, staff, and visitors, while adhering to strict health and safety standards. You will play a key role in ensuring high-quality meal service that supports patient recovery and well-being.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Meal Preparation: Prepare and cook a variety of meals following dietary requirements and portion control, ensuring that all meals are nutritious, appealing, and meet NHS guidelines.
  • Dietary Needs: Accommodate special dietary requirements, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal, and other medical or religious preferences.
  • Menu Planning: Assist with planning menus that offer variety and meet the nutritional needs of patients and staff, working closely with dietitians and the catering manager.
  • Food Safety & Hygiene: Maintain a clean and safe working environment by adhering to food safety standards (including HACCP) and NHS infection control guidelines.
  • Stock Control: Manage food stock levels, check deliveries, and ensure that ingredients are fresh, stored correctly, and used efficiently.
  • Teamwork: Work as part of the kitchen team to ensure the smooth running of meal services, particularly during busy periods.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, including COSHH, manual handling, and safe use of kitchen equipment.

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Experience: Previous experience working as a cook, preferably in a healthcare or institutional setting.
  • Culinary Skills: Ability to prepare meals in large quantities while maintaining high standards of taste and presentation.
  • Food Hygiene Certificate: Level 2 or 3 Food Safety and Hygiene Certificate required (or willingness to obtain).
  • Knowledge of Dietary Requirements: Understanding of dietary needs and the ability to adapt meals accordingly.
  • Team Player: Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work under pressure during busy meal times.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensure that meals are prepared accurately according to specific dietary and portion guidelines.
