Location: HMP Millsike
Salary: £30,000 - £35,000 per annum (dependent on experience)
Contract Type: Permanent
Hours of Work: 38.5 hours per week

  • Four days per week: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM
  • One half-day per week: either 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM or 1:00 PM – 5:30 PM

Our client is a leading provider of education, training, and employability services, delivering high-quality programmes that support individuals in achieving their full potential. They are seeking a Numeracy Tutor to join their prison education team at HMP Millsike, delivering City & Guilds Functional Skills Maths qualifications (Entry 1 to Level 2).

This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference by equipping learners with essential numeracy skills that will enhance their personal development and long-term employability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver engaging and inclusive maths lessons to a class of 12 learners, ensuring high levels of participation and progress.
  • Prepare learners for City & Guilds Functional Skills Maths exams, ensuring they gain valuable qualifications.
  • Conduct initial assessments and use BKSB diagnostics to determine learner starting points.
  • Develop and review Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) to track and support learner progression.
  • Adapt teaching methods to cater to diverse learning needs, including those with neurodiverse profiles.
  • Promote reading for pleasure as a tool to improve literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, learning support practitioners, and prison staff to provide tailored support for learners.
  • Motivate learners by demonstrating the practical application of maths in everyday life.

Essential/Desirable:

Essential:

  • A minimum Level 3 qualification in Maths and English.
  • A Level 5 teaching qualification (or willingness to work towards one).
  • Experience delivering Functional Skills Maths to diverse learners.
  • Strong ability to engage, motivate, and support learners at various levels.
  • Effective communication and collaborative working skills.
  • Organised and proactive in managing administrative tasks, including ILPs and exam bookings.

Desirable:

  • Experience working with learners in prison education or similar environments.
  • Understanding of barriers to learning and strategies to support disengaged learners.
