Staff Engineer

Opportunity

The Staff Engineer (3D and Slip) will assist in the leading and development of the Slip & 3D teams and processes.  This position will develop specific performance key performance indicators (KPI’s) to enhance productivity and quality in the assigned areas.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Support leadership and provide recommendations during the headcount review and plan elaboration.
  • Attend and have meaningful participation in all production, planning and strategy meetings.
  • Support lean activities initiated by manufacturing. Leverage both automated and visual systems for best-in-class performance.  Assist in the deployment of e-business solutions.
  • Manage the formulation of both manual cast and pressure cast slip bodies in the WI Pottery by:
  • Measuring slip casting performance for thickness and firmness.
  • Monitoring plant yield for any opportunities for slip adjustments.
  • Test slip fired properties including shrinkage, warpage, MOR, and absorption.
  • Measure and adjust rheological properties of slip bodies through the entire value stream.
  • Test all incoming raw materials related to slip and mold making, including surface area, particle size, and transmittance.
  • Participate in weekly or monthly conversations with vendors to discuss incoming raw material properties and performance
  • Participate in weekly conferences with technical support groups with other plants to discuss larger scale technical challenges and capital projects and provide effective recommendations and solutions.
  • Manage raw material inventories by ordering materials and tracking monthly usage.
  • Management of the WI pottery materials lab and 3D areas, including technicians and equipment.
  • Weekly/Quarterly reporting of slip and raw material performance to multiple levels of management
  • Review plaster performance from both the mold making department and cast floor.
  • When required or requested, create test plans for the qualification and verification of new or replacement raw materials.
  • Support the development of new technologies in assigned areas.
  • Lead and engage the associates in both areas; work to further develop the associates in preparation for future career pathing.

Skills/Requirements

  • Required: Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree in Ceramics Engineering or similar; intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office and SAP experience.
  • Previous experience of 3-5 years in a manufacturing environment.
  • Desired: Masters in materials/ceramic engineering or similar.
  • Previous experience of 7 years or more in a ceramic environment.
  • Microsoft Office and SAP master skills.
