This NPI PROJECT ENGINEER - CORE position will be located in the Howmet Morristown, TN core facility and will be involved in new product introductions and dedicated to providing the best core (visual, dimensional) to the next operation (wax injection) through tooling and process development, having strong interactions with product engineers, tool build and maintenance resources, material process owners and shop floor resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and direct the New Product Introduction (NPI) initiative ensuring ceramic core development in accordance with overall project timelines, budget, and quoted standards.
  • Lead initiatives to achieve product yield improvements, variation reduction, and achieve cost reduction goals related to the manufacture of ceramic cores/parts.
  • Direct and manage the activities regarding product tool/part designs and standards.
  • Support the evaluation and implementation of cost and product improvements and drive problem solving activities.
  • Establish professional working relationships with the engineering team at each casting facility and promote effective communication regarding product status and issues.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring NPI core engineers in the department while also providing support as a resource for other departments and generic improvement activities.
  • Develops scrap and labor costs for cost modeling. Defines, solicits and reviews quotes for tooling and cores.
  • Defines and implements control plans and FMEA per customer requirements; Collects, analyzes and prepares statistical data per control plan.
  • Initiates, prepares and validates dimensional qualification packages to meet customer requirements.
  • Plans and formulates new product introduction engineering programs within area of assigned responsibility.
  • Implements and reviews part, tooling and process design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards and customer contract requirements and related specifications.
  • Supports activities concerned with technical development, customer issues, cost reduction programs and in resolving engineering design and test problems.
  • Prepares interim and completion project report, as necessary.
  • Interfaces with production personnel regarding all processing requirements.  Interacts with suppliers and customers on technical issues.
  • Performs process quality investigations, as required.
  • Develops and implements process improvements and cost reductions.
  • Designs tools and fixtures pertinent to processing.
  • Generates material requisitions to initiate procurement.
  • Translates customer requirements into usable work instructions, interfaces with the casting plant on technical issues.
  • Assembles data packages (PM301) for casting engineer approval.
  • Specifies processing and generates work instructions.
  • Actively pursues elimination of waste, the improvement of equipment reliability and efficiency, and the reduction of operating costs.  Employs statistical methods as necessary.
  • Continuously improves the performance of job-related responsibilities.
  • Responsible for coordinating and developing stable, high yielding processes.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution. 
  • A minimum of 3 years experience as a ceramic core engineer in the investment casting industry.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma, statistical analysis, and scientific methods for problem solving.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Ability to manipulate and interrogate CAD models.
  • Have good organizational skills.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution in the following disciplines preferred: Mechanical Engineer, Aerospace Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer.
  • Experience as a ceramic core engineer in the investment casting industry.
  • Leadership experience with technical support staff.
  • Fluency with CAD software, preferably with Siemens NX. 
  • Experience in new process control development and product start ups.
  • Project management experience.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Proven problem-solving skills using sound fundamentals as well as history of trials/execution of improvements.
  • Ability to effectively work/communicate as part of a project team.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and activities.
  • Able to work in a self-directed or team environment and have good organizations skills.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma, statistical analysis, and scientific methods for problem solving.
