UKAEA is leading the drive to put fusion energy on the grid, to give the world a new form of long-term, sustainable low-carbon electricity. At their sites at Culham, Oxfordshire and Rotherham, South Yorkshire, they have a rapidly growing workforce to fulfil their expanding programme of research, focused on delivering the UK's first fusion prototype power plant by 2040.

Projects in UKAEA vary in risk and complexity and range in value from under 50k to over 0.5bn. Projects span a number of sectors including science, innovation, engineering, regulatory, technology, and facility development. All projects are focussed on helping us to deliver our mission which is to develop fusion as a source of energy generation.

The role of the Project Manager is to lead / manage the project and the project team on a day-to-day basis. The Project Manager is responsible for driving and overseeing the delivery of the project to ensure that the objectives are clearly defined and achieved within the agreed time, cost and quality constraints. The Project Manager has a key role in project governance and working with stakeholders, to ensure the agreed project outputs are delivered to enable benefits to be realised.


In this post, the Project Manager will manage projects with a high level of complexity and will showcase strong leadership. At UKAEA these are generally projects that have a high degree of uncertainty, are large in size, politically sensitive, technically complex, have a large number of stakeholders and/or often need procedures and methodologies to be adapted to suit unique situations.

Accountabilities:

* Contracts - Contract Project Management
* Delivery - Create and lead the project to deliver the agreed outcomes within time, cost and quality constraints.
* Project management - Day-to-day management and leadership of the project and the project team. Provide effective leadership and management controls. Set project controls. Design the project structure and organisation appropriate to stage. Set appropriate delivery methodologies. Manage effective transition between project phases.
* Business case - Develop and draft the business case, with input from specialists as necessary.
* Budget - Develop the budget and track delivery within budget.
* Resources - Identify skill requirements; and deploy and develop resources. Manage large sized team.
* Benefits realisation - Deliver the agreed business case benefits and outcomes. Ensure appropriate Benefits Realisation Strategy is in place, and monitor longer term delivery of benefits against the business case.
* Stakeholder management - Identify and manage stakeholder relationships and need for senior level support. Manage internal and external relationships as appropriate.
* Risks and issues - Identify and monitor project risks and issues. Develop mitigating actions and escalate as appropriate. Identify and work with related projects to manage interdependencies.
* Governance - Support effective governance and decision making. Provide reporting and engage in mechanisms that hold you, as Project Manager, to account for delivery.
* Assurance - Engage with assurance reviews and support action on recommendations. Organise assurance processes such as gateway reviews, as required.
* Change management - Ensure effective Change Management processes are in place to agree and document changes to deliverables as agreed with stakeholders.
* Guidance and support - Provide support, guidance and coaching for the project team. Show commitment to personal development. Promote effective individual and team performance.
* Project performance and controls - Cascade vision and translate into delivery objectives for the team. Develop and maintain Project Plan. Identify and set appropriate Project Controls. Manage performance and report progress to sponsors.
* HSE - Ensure project oversight is sufficient to ensure compliance with HSE, quality and contract management procedures.
* Escalation point - Resolving obstacles to strategy delivery and leading the identification and employment of creative solutions to overcoming them
* Reporting - Reporting of progress against milestones, changes, exceptions, budgets and other key performance indicators in accordance with the reporting drumbeat through the use of agreed dashboards.

Budget for projects with high level of complexity; budget responsibility range but typically >100M

Specific Qualifications/Experience:

* Substantial experience of managing large complex projects / programmes (>50M) in a technical environment

* Excellent experience of contract project management, ideally using NEC4
* Excellent people management, negotiating and communication skills
* Experience of developing successful teams and individuals
* Experience of financial management of significant (MM's) budget
* Experience of interfacing with scientific and engineering teams
* Qualified in any of the following: APM PMQ, APM Chartered Project Professional, Project Leadership Programme (PLP) or Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) Practitioner
* A degree and significant experience within any scientific or engineering related discipline
* Strong commercial awareness with the ability to make sound economic decisions that maximise project value
* Demonstratable high standard of project leadership, able to inspire with vision and take everyone forwards
* Passionate about developing people and the P3M profession

Desirable
* Excellent understanding of the wider issues impacting on the UKAEA
* Membership of an appropriate Professional Institute
