Our client, a leading company in the marine sector, is currently seeking a Lead Mechanical Designer to join their dynamic team. This permanent position focuses on mechanical engineering and design, with a strong emphasis on 3D modelling, 2D manufacture packs, system design, and product visualisation. The role also involves supporting the naval architecture and systems design teams, as well as developing design processes.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) in 2D and 3D using Siemens NX, Rhino, and/or AutoCAD
  • Preparation of 2D design documentation such as structural arrangements, ply books, cut files, assemblies
  • Preparation of 3D design documentation such as mould geometries and CNC machined parts
  • Creation of design visualisations using 2D renders and 3D virtual reality models in NX or Unreal Engine
  • Liaison with shop floor to capture design changes and produce as-fits
  • Material selection and mechanical subsystem design
  • Design of hydraulic and actuation systems
  • Programming CNC machines
  • Interfacing with the design team to ensure design requirements are met
  • Design for manufacture and manufacture strategy
  • Application of relevant ISO and BS standards for manufacture, such as tolerancing or weld specifications
  • Supporting the marketing team with visualisations of designs
  • Providing guidance and mentoring to junior members of the team


General Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  • Using personal judgement to develop effective solutions to challenges
  • Maintaining proficiency in relevant IT and other systems
  • Acting ethically, with integrity, and in the best interests of the business
  • Maintaining professional and supportive relationships with team members and other departments
  • Carrying out any other duties as directed by senior management
  • Managing time effectively to maximise productivity


Health & Safety Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring the working area is clean and safe, complying with best practices and health and safety policies
  • Ensuring equipment used is safe, within electrical test date, with working guards and interlocks
  • Acting safely in line with company processes and health and safety procedures
  • Reporting potential health and safety hazards to the supervisor or QHSE manager
  • Ensuring PPE or work wear is worn and checked regularly, reporting when replacements are required


Job Requirements:

  • Significant experience as a Mechanical Engineer
  • Proficient in Siemens NX and other CAD software
  • Strong skills in 3D modelling, 2D design documentation, and mechanical subsystem design
  • Expertise in material selection and CNC programming
  • Ability to create 2D renders and 3D virtual reality models
  • Good understanding of ISO and BS standards for manufacture
  • Excellent communication and mentoring skills
