Embedded within the Engineering Projects department, the Mechanical Design Engineer is a key engineering role working alongside other discipline Engineers, Project Engineers, Engineering Managers and Project Managers.?

The Mechanical Design Engineers work will span all project phases including Feasibility, Front End Engineering Design (FEED), Detailed Design/Construction, Commissioning and Handover.?

The Mechanical Design Engineers focus however, is to contribute to the development of process and manufacturing plant design by assisting in feasibility studies and concept design, typically by assessing plant spacial requirements and constraints and assisting in options analysis.

The Mechanical Design Engineer will then build upon requirements, concept design, and develop the design further by producing key drawings and documentation such as Equipment and Piping General Arrangements (GAs), Isometrics, Bill of Materials (BoMs), Piping and other Mechanical Specifications and Scope of Works (SoW), 3D Models and Request for Quotations (RFQs).


Key Tasks


  • ?Produce Mechanical Specifications & Data Sheets for Static & Rotating Equipment (Pumps, Vessels, Tanks, Heat Exchangers, Vendor Package Skids etc.).
  • Procurement & Vendor Package Management from Quotation to Final Inspection Stage including Full Vendor Document Reviews & Approvals.
  • Responsible for producing 2D & 3D Piping Design (e.g. Layouts, GAs, Pipe Supports, Vessels, Frame, Hook-Ups, Fabrication Details).
  • Complete Witness Testing & Final Inspections.
  • Conduct and document requirements capture.
  • Produce Fabrication Isometrics & General Arrangement Production.
  • Produce Scope of Works for Fabrication, Installation & Testing Phases
  • Calculate factors like tolerance, dimensions, and thermal and structural analysis
  • You will support and/or carry out feasibility studies.
  • Assist Project Manager, Engineering Manager, Project Engineer and Process/Chemical Engineers.
  • Preparing Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and Utility Flow Diagrams (UFDs), as well as conducting process mechanical design by developing process flow diagrams and P&IDs, and participating in HAZOP reviews.
  • Present design or solution presentations to project teams and senior stakeholders.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of engineering and project practices and standards such as document and drawing templates, specifications, and design practices.
  • ?Help drive improvements across the department, help facilitate positive change and become a source of knowledge and expertise for the mechanical discipline.


Knowledge, experience & skills


  • Proficient in the use of industry standard/common 2D and 3D CAD software packages.
  • Knowledgeable/experience in mechanical and piping standards.
  • Strong MS Office skills.
  • Experience in manufacturing industries, process industries, engineering/construction environments.
  • Be able to read drawings and technical documentation
  • Knowledge of plant/manufacturing design and operation.
  • Technical Apprenticeship and/or HNC/HND and/or Degree/Masters in a relevant discipline/field or equivalent experienced practitioner.
  • Hold drivers licence and have a car/means of getting about on their own to travel to sites for meetings.

    Advantageous:

  • Knowledge or awareness of contractual/commercial strategies.
  • Formal Health & Safety Qualification.
  • Highly regulated industries.
