Long Term Futures is seeking a compassionate and patient SEN Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a Year 3 pupil with ASD at a welcoming primary school in Handsworth, Birmingham (B20). This role involves both academic and pastoral support, helping the pupil develop confidence, independence, and social interaction skills. The right candidate will have a nurturing approach and be able to provide a structured and consistent learning environment, ensuring the pupil can engage positively in school life.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide personalised 1:1 support, ensuring the pupil can access learning in a structured and supportive way.
  • Implement individual strategies to support emotional regulation, sensory needs, and social interaction.
  • Offer pastoral support, helping the pupil navigate challenges, build confidence, and develop self-esteem.
  • Work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to adapt learning tasks to suit the pupil's needs.
  • Use visual aids, structured routines, and positive reinforcement to encourage engagement and independence.
  • Use positive behaviour management techniques to de-escalate situations and promote self-regulation.

Candidate Requirements:

  • A Level 2 or 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning (or relevant experience in SEN support).
  • Prior experience supporting children with ASD and SEMH needs, particularly in a primary school setting.
  • Strong understanding of sensory processing difficulties, communication barriers, and emotional regulation strategies.
  • Experience using PECS, Makaton, social stories, or other communication and behavioural strategies (preferred but not essential).
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and best practices in child protection.
