Handyman / Technician

Working hours 8.00am - 5.00pm

Pay Rate - 16.50-18.00 depending on experience

The Technician will provide comprehensive engineering support to maintain the DESPI PFI Contract buildings. This role requires a detailed understanding of current and new Building Services systems, compliance with contract procedures, and adherence to statutory regulations, including Fire Certificate and DESPI operational processes.

Key responsibilities include ensuring building activities comply with Health and Safety requirements, maintaining 100% uptime per contractual obligations, and ensuring effective shift staffing. The Technician will address plant failures, complete assigned work, and manage abnormal operating conditions with a focus on proficiency and efficiency.




Key Responsibilities:

  • Operational Duties:

    • Operate all systems within the buildings efficiently and competently (including HV operations).

    • Ensure Specialist Service Provider worksheets are signed off, work quality inspected, and recommendations escalated.

    • Maintain effective shift handovers covering critical plant status, isolations, issues, ongoing works, special tasks, and housekeeping standards.

  • Plant and Equipment Management:

    • Conduct plant inspections, works inspections, and audits to address areas of concern, ensuring proper housekeeping and workmanship.

    • Maintain engineering control rooms, workshops, stores, and rest areas to the highest housekeeping standards.

    • Ensure site tools, equipment, and key inventory are updated and calibrated.

  • Compliance and Safety:

    • Follow all local processes and escalation procedures.

    • Issue, close, and inspect work permits for activities, ensuring compliance with regulations (e.g., HV, LV, access, hot works, confined spaces).

    • Conduct regular checks and maintain logs, including:

      • Meter readings, plant checks, and CRAC checks.

      • Life Safety Systems Logs.

      • Water Treatment Log Books.

      • Emergency Lighting Log Books.

      • Fire and Life Safety System Logs.

      • Statutory and compliance inspections.

  • Technical Expertise:

    • Manage and troubleshoot the following systems:

      • Building management systems (BMS) and control systems.

      • Air conditioning, AHUs, boilers, and heating systems.

      • Generators, fuel systems, and associated ventilation/exhaust systems.

      • AC/DC single-phase and three-phase motors.

      • UPS systems and static switches.

      • Emergency lighting and HV systems.

  • Procurement and Reporting:

    • Ensure economical ordering of parts and accurate processing of quotations and purchase requisitions.

    • Complete all record-keeping functions daily and provide handover updates during shift changes.

    • Prepare quotes, reports, and updates on small works projects.




Impact and Complexity:

This role requires expertise in the operation and troubleshooting of diverse systems, including:

  • Building management systems.

  • Control systems.

  • Electrical testing, portable appliance testing, and condition-based monitoring.

  • HVAC systems and related components.

  • High Voltage (HV) systems (training will be provided as needed).




Qualifications and Required Experience:

  • Demonstrated technical competence in building services, including BEMS, UPS, generators, static switches, water treatment, and HVAC systems.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to manage staff at various levels or challenging situations.

  • Proactive in achieving high operational standards.

  • Basic IT proficiency.

  • Experience in spares ordering, competitive quoting, and small works projects.

  • Previous experience in PFI contracts in a management or supervisory role.

  • Essential Qualifications:

    • 5 years' experience in the Building Services industry.

    • HV authorized person certification.

    • City & Guilds Parts 1 & 2 (or equivalent) in electrical/mechanical discipline.

    • 18th Edition
